The Best Christmas Present I Ever Got!

posted on 15 May 2012 in Recreation and Hobbies

I now work for a trek bike shop in London, but let me recount my earlier experiences with bikes. As a child I loved riding my bike, and the one I had for much of my childhood was a hand me down from my older cousin. One year at Christmas I remember the only thing I asked for from Santa Claus was a new bike. Christmas morning came and it was under the tree! I had just gotten a brand new, pink Huffy bicycle complete with a basket and streamers on the handles. Quickly I went outside to ride it down the driveway, and since I had not ridden without training wheels in awhile, I quickly fell and got my ankle twisted in the spokes. I remember it hurting very badly and me crying for my mom, but she didn’t hear me. A short while later, since I was unable to walk I began crawling toward the front door and knocking on it. My mom finally opened the door, scooped me up in her arms and then whisked me to the emergency room where I ended up with a broken ankle. After that, I never rode in the driveway again.

Better Work Relations Makes Better Work Environment

posted on 14 May 2012 in Business and Finance

The worst part of working in an office is that workers have a tendency to fight a lot. The worst part is that the fighting actually overtakes the priority of working which makes everything less productive. To change this it is important to foster friendship and community among the workers. An example of this is paid volunteer opportunities work the workers where the company sponsors community interaction. Not only will the company get a better reputation but also that the workers will do something fun together and share in the experience. If it is forced then it will not work since no one likes being forced. Also, having just attended a leadership development programme, mangement could learn from being better leaders too. Office managers should consider sponsoring sports leagues such as bowling, basketball and golf. By sharing in a team sport the workers will see each other outside the work day and develop friendship. Even though companies are interested primarily with making money, cheeping out on employees will only backfire.

Why I Loved My Fisher Price Little People Ferris Wheel

posted on 14 May 2012 in Toys and Games

When I was around 4 years old, I received a package in the mail. It was a present from my grandparents who lived several states away. Inside was a Fisher Price "Little People" Ferris Wheel! It was one of those wonderful wooden toys that turned when wound up, and played music just like at a real amusement park. This was in 1968 when toys were well made. The little people who rode in the Ferris wheel were wooden, and the ride itself was made of heavy duty plastic with molded parts that really withstood the test of time. I kept that toy for years and it always made me very happy when I played with it. I loved watching the wheel turn and the music play, as a little figure of a man, dressed as an amusement park worker, cranked a handle endlessly at the base of the Ferris wheel. I'm not sure what became of my Ferris wheel. I fear it got discarded many years later after I grew up and moved out of the house. I thought about it when I had my son, and wished I still had it around for him to play with. No doubt he'll want more sophisticated toys - remote control planes and hte like. However, I did do a search on an auction site and found that there are still Ferris wheels just like mine available to purchase. Maybe one day I will buy one and get a little piece of my childhood back.

Don’t Buy a Car: Enjoy The Benefits Of Car Hire Services Instead

posted on 13 May 2012 in Cars and Transport

The cost of operating a car can be a problem for many people. The rising cost of gas and insurance are making difficult for many people to own their own car. If a person finds themselves in this situation, they should not worry. With a little bit of thought they will be able to get wherever they need at a much lower cost. Public transportation is one of the most cost effective ways for a person to get from one place to another. The problem is that there are times when it is not convenient for a person ot use public transportation. This is when a person will enjoy the benefits of car hire services, and I frequently hire a motor from the local car hire firm in Hinckley. A person will be able to hire a car for the period of time they need to accomplish something. When they are done with the need for the car they return it to the place they hired it from. A person only has to pay for the gas they used and the price of the car for the time they had it. They do not have to worry about the monthly payment, the cost of insurance and the cost of maintenance for the car. They also do not have to worry about parking or storing the car when they don’t need it. It is the perfect solution that more people need to take advantage of.

The Best Argument Style for Different Situations

posted on 11 May 2012 in Uncategorised

From a very young age, we learn to argue. We make claims on what we think is true, right, just, or what should be done. We then provide reasons that support our claims. We are asking the other to accept that our reasons are good and our claims are valid. We draw on evidence, emotions, and our own good character to persuade others. Despite how strong an argument might be, however, we do not always get what we want and sometimes we even require mediation to help resolve an argument. We all have different styles of arguing that can affect the outcomes. I am typically an avoider. I avoid conflict at all costs. When I can't avoid an argument, I also tend to accommodate the other's wishes. I think this is typical of many who do not like to argue. Others in my family are not like me. Some are competitors. They want to win the argument at all costs. When you meet a competitor, arguments can become aggressive at times. We are taught that compromise is the best way to settle an argument, but it seems like that might not be entirely correct. When two people come to a compromise, neither person really gets what she/he wants. Collaboration is the best method. Although it takes a lot longer than some of the other styles, collaboration leads to a win-win scenario. In my own life, I decide if the argument is really important. I then choose what style to use in the specific situation. I also try to figure out what style the other is using. Two competitors never resolved an argument. Adaptation and flexibility are the most important traits of successful argument.

For Our Family, There Is Simply No Place Like Home

posted on 11 May 2012 in Construction and Industrial

My wife and two children aged four and one, currently live in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, and our house is truly special to us. My wife and I purchased the home five years ago, just after she got pregnant with our first child (our daughter, now four) and I've done a lot of work on the property since then (as I work in flat roofing services). We lived in a small bungalow, but wanted to move up to a home which we felt we could live in for the next 25 years and raise our family. The home we picked couldn't be more perfect. It's 2800 square feet, with a finished basment (bringing the total to 4000). The lot is huge, and we live on a court (at the end), so our kids can play in the middle of the street, and we don't have to worry (as much!). Our street is filled with other children, and we are friends with almost our entire street. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful home.

DIY Projects: Making the Dream Life a Reality

posted on 8 May 2012 in Home and Garden

Many take pride in DIY jobs. It gives one a sense of pride, accomplishment, and even better yet saves money. When it comes to my house, if adequate money, time, and motivation were all acquired, I would love to redo our kitchen. I take great pride in cooking and baking. For our family, many great memories are made over dinner conversation however, to be able to easily create great meals, one must have a good kitchen. Our kitchen is currently very small with little storage, and a layout that leaves much to be desired. I would redo the cheap, white laminate with real tile.I would turn one wall into a kitchen bar counter to give more workspace and better access for conversation with anyone in the living room. I would update all the appliances as well and install newer cabinets with more space, and with any money left over, install some new door handles to the two doors of the kitchen. That would be my dream DIY project.

Driving Us Down The Wrong Side Of The Road.

posted on 7 May 2012 in Cars and Transport

Driving near any international airport in the United States can be pretty dangerous. People from Europe fly over and rent a car. All I can say is watch out for oncoming traffic. Not only do they drive on the wrong side of the road, they drive with no mention of a speed limit. It is not in their vocabulary. Now the UK wanted to protect themselves. If you have an UK International Driving Licence you can apply for a permit to drive in the other countries. Seems silly doesn't it. You would think that a driver license would be better than a permit. As long as it was up to date. Now you can also get a driver license in any other country and you won't need a license in the UK. Your other country license can be used in any country. So I have to ask why bother getting a license in the UK. Perhaps it is another way to collect extra fees making an UK citizen pay for a permit to drive even though they have a UK license. Politics make no sense here or there.

Driving on a Budget: My Tips

posted on 6 May 2012 in Cars and Transport

My father is always telling me that cars are expensive. The gasoline to run them, unexpected repairs, regular checks, insurance… the list goes on. I have my eyes on a new vauxhall corsa, yet I always hear my dad's voice nagging me in my thoughts. The question of how to run a car economically is often on my mind. As well as being environmentally friendly, driving at 50 miles per hour or less is said to burn fuel at a lower rate, meaning your money is going further. Accelerating and braking gently, rather than suddenly, has a similar effect. Not least, driving the car carefully will preserve the engine and parts for longer, meaning fewer repairs in the long-term. Make sure you monitor the oil and water levels in your car regularly. Low levels of essential fluids can cause serious damage to the engine, which would prove very costly. In addition to how you drive the car, when you drive the car can also save you money. Can you car pool? Are you able to walk the distance instead, or use public transport? For long journeys, a train or coach can often prove cheaper for a lone traveller than using the car. When you must use the car, remember it is a luxury and one that will always cost you a lot of money. It may be necessary to economize in other areas to afford your vehicle.

Job Satisfaction As a Freelance Van Driver

posted on 5 May 2012 in Cars and Transport

I can make good money working as a freelance van driver. The vans I drive are very cool too - complete with all the latest van roofracks and accessories. Because I only drive as a part-time job, I can pick and choose my hours so that I can also spend time with my family or even take the day off if I want to. I usually operate as a courier service helping people move bulky loads or boxes from place to place. There is more and more of this sort of work around with the rise of shopping on the internet. It has taken me a while but I have built up a group of people who know that I am reliable and that I can read a map, which comes in very handy for finding people's houses even with GPS in the cab. I really enjoy driving and I like getting time to myself in the van, it is my own little kingdom with my music on and where I am my own boss.

Hot Tubs and Spas: A Great Way To Unwind

posted on 4 May 2012 in Home and Garden

You may find that relaxing in a hot tub at the end of a long work period may be the perfect way to unwind. The hot water relaxes and loosens tense muscles, offering relief to the muscle pulls, strains, and sprains. Hot tubs are available for use in most hotels and spas, but if you plan on using one long term, there are plenty of stores that offer hot tubs you can buy and install at home. Spas offer massages, facials, and many other remedies to help you relax and distress. Some spas are even located as part of the hotel you may be staying at! On the other hand, there are some second hand hot tubs on the market you can buy for your own home. Going to a spa ensures you will receive the best pampering treatment you have ever had, enabling you to forget your work week in no time. Hot tubs are also a great way for couples to relax in a slightly less casual setting than a swimming pool.

A Fantasy or High Quality Engineering?

posted on 4 May 2012 in Home and Garden

he rise in popularity in steampunk is relatively recent, and includes a mix of a long gone fantasy world and the high quality engineering practices of the Victorian era.

The Victorians embodied an era of optimism and revelled in the delight of inventions, new discoveries and a unique form of 'futurism'.

This was not only reflected in the fiction of the day, including the works of H G Wells and Jules Verne, but also in the creativity of the inventors and engineers, who created gadgets and contraptions to improve the world!

It also coincided with the end years of the industrial revolution and the advent of steam power. A steam engine is not only a remarkable piece of engineering, but it is also a very visual object, where you can see the steam boiler, rivets and bolts, gears and fly-wheels, pistons and shafts. Steampunk design, art and literature, together with steampunk objects celebrate this remarkable era.

Why Kate Winslet is Far and Above My Favorite Female Celebrity

posted on 2 May 2012 in Fashion

Kate Winslet is, with no doubt, my favorite female celebrity. There are many reasons why I have made this selection. Yes, I know she is not the most gorgeous girl in Hollywood. However, she is very attractive in a very normal kind of way. She isn't like the others who seem to be more model (modelling things like Forever Unique dresses, admitedly looking good) than actress! She does not seem to go out of her way to make herself look fake or like anything she is not. She also weighs more than 100 pounds, which cannot be said of most celebrities her age. She appears to enjoy her life and not simply be wasting away into the fame and fortune of most females her age. I also admire her for her acting ability. She has starred in a number of Oscar-nominated films. Her recent role in Revolutionary Road alongside Leonardo DiCaprio was stunning and spellbinding. She definitely made a connection with the character who she was portraying and fit the role very well from the start.

Find out how you can find a book of your choice wherever it is

posted on 25 April 2012 in Arts and Entertainment

Numbers are easy to look for because one can remember them while conducting their search. Numbers are given to everything that can take them in and be comfortable. When they are given to books, they are called international standard book numbers and a user is able to find isbn conversion of a certain book that they want to read about. Only those books that have international standard book numbers are easy to find. The number they have been given by those who issue the numbers is the one that will guide a user into finding the book wherever it is. It doesn't matter which book a user is looking for, all books are given numbers and these numbers are the ones that users search for when they are looking for a book. Writers of various books are advised to get their books given numbers so that users can find the books quite easily when they search for them. It is also easy to get a book through the international standard book number as opposed to the title or content of this book you are looking for.

What to Do when Your Find a Fault in Bt Services

posted on 25 April 2012 in Technology

The oldest telecommunication company, bt group, has its roots in the third most populous islands in the world, United Kingdom. Apart from being the oldest, bt is also one of the largest global corporations in the world. The company offers broadband and subscription television services to over eighty million people in over one hundred and seventy five nations. Serving such a large population of customers, bt has to be efficient in provision of services, but most importantly, its technicians have to have high standards of morality and ethics. This is because on daily basis, the companys customer care branch receives hundreds of complaint calls from all over the world. Thus, technicians have to be slow to anger as some unsatisfied customers are bound to bombard them with insults. However, when you want to phone bt to report a fault, it does not hurt to be as courteous and respectful as the technician on the other side of the phone is. Many customers, heap the blame on these technicians even when the fault is theirs. Hence, if you are a bt group customer seeking an explanation and solution to a problem ailing your broadband or television, being courteous and respectful will not undermine you human dignity.

On Christmas Shopping Way Ahead of Time

posted on 21 April 2012 in Fashion

My family and I are very close, and Christmas is a major time for us. It's one of the two or three times per year that everyone can [usually] make it home to one place and enjoy the holidays together. Although it's 8 months away, I want to buy some really cool gifts for my mother, brother and sisters for Christmas this year, so I decided I'd spend all year leading up to Christmas shopping around for good ideas, and buy a few along the way. I work at a grocery store, and we got a special stock of 4 magnificent birdhouses, each unique. The only problem was we only got one of each, so I didn't have any time to hesitate. I had to get them before they were gone. I enjoy woodworking and such crafts, so I plan to build a little neighborhood scene, and put all these classic-style houses and shack in it, like a giant bird house village. I'm going to buy my brother the best new 2012 release of snowboarding gloves and goggles when they come out, since the two of us are snow fanatics. Five days a week on the mountain isn't irregular to us. I'm not sure what my sisters would like yet, but hopefully I'll find more in the time coming - maybe make them something with my jewellery making kits. I still have quite awhile before Christmas comes.

On Why I'm Just Loving Graffiti

posted on 17 April 2012 in Arts and Entertainment

I love graffiti. Usually done on boring plain walls in hard to reach places, it brightens up even the dullest view. Good graffiti art is cheeky, thought-provoking, clever, witty, funny.

Whether you are sitting on a bus or a train, looking out for graffiti can make the time pass more quickly, even bad artwork can act like a milestone or marker so that you always know where you are. On a trip to Spain recently I began talking to an elderly couple who explained that they had moved to Spain to get away from the dirt and graffiti. They have obviously never travelled on the trains as graffiti is everywhere, even in Spain. Where do the artists get their ideas from, similar but with subtle differences, the world over. Colours swirling around each other, at first glance looking like a mish-mash of everything and nothing, then you look a little closer and you start to spot various forms, words and even celebrity faces. Everyday is a new experience viewed with fresh eyes, everyday something new is spotted, I love graffiti and long may it last.

How Google mail can still text message people

posted on 17 April 2012 in Technology

There was a time that I was very attached to my phone. This was because I had a good phone that had numerous features that worked well for me. The phone was so good in that I did not even have to use my computer because I could access the internet via the phone. This is the one feature I used a lot because I was always on the internet. And I was always texting my friends and family using my phone. We went to a class trip and we had a lot of fun. In the midst of the merry making, I think I lost my phone. I asked for a replacement but I was told that I had to wait for a week. My friends told me that I could use my Google email to send them text messages even without a phone. This is something I was willing to try out so I contacted googlemail helpline and asked them how to use that feature. All I needed was the correct format of the number of the person and then there after write the message. I got forty text messages per day, and that was a good enough deal for me.

My Love Affair With Nine West Shoes

posted on 16 April 2012 in Fashion

When it comes to putting together an outfit, the most important feature in my opinion is the shoes. You can have on an expensive dress, but if you have on the wrong pair of shoes the whole outfit just doesn't work. One of my favorite shoe brands for the past several years has been Nine West. I like Nine West because they design shoes in a wide variety of comfortable shoe styles. One of the first pair of shoes I purchased from them was a pair of black patent leather pumps. The leather was made of very good quality, and despite having a three inch heel the shoe was very comfortable. This pair of shoes looked great with both my daytime and nighttime outfits. I found them on Google Products with a search for shoes uk. In addition to the patent leather pumps, I also like Nine West's wedge heel shoe line. I purchased a pair of brown leather wedge pumps about five years ago, and the shoe has maintained its original shape and color.
